How do I test if my controller has stick drift?

SHORT ANSWER

[ THE PROBLEM ]

The problem

Your character walks on its own. The camera slowly pans when you are not touching anything. In a shooter, your aim creeps to the left just enough to lose the fight. You are not sure whether it is the game’s dead zone, the pad, or you.

Most of the ways to check are bad: a website that needs a PC and a browser gamepad API, a game’s own calibration screen that hides the numbers, or «rotate the stick and see if it feels right». None of them gives you a number you can compare next month.

And if you play through a stream, you have one more suspect: maybe the remote-play app is mangling the pad before the game ever sees it.

[ WHY IT HAPPENS ]

Why it happens

Stick drift is the potentiometer or sensor under the stick reporting a small offset when the stick is centred. Games hide small offsets behind a dead zone; when the drift grows past it, the input leaks through. Dust, wear and a loose spring all push the resting position off centre, and the offset tends to grow over time.

To know for sure you need to read the raw axis value at rest, over several seconds, and compare it with the dead zone the game applies. That needs a tool that talks to the pad directly, not through an emulation layer.

    The button tester shows every button and undocumented bits; the reaction test gives you a time in milliseconds to compare pads or check the wheel or arcade stick you use from the sofa.

01Do I need a PC to run the drift test?

No. The gamepad tools run on the Android device with or without a PC session. The PC test bench is an extra, not a requirement.

02Does it work with Bluetooth pads?

Yes for buttons, sticks and triggers. Rumble cannot be tested over Bluetooth yet: today it travels over USB, and Bluetooth rumble is coming soon.

03Can I test my racing wheel or arcade stick?

Yes. Anything Windows has a driver for can be plugged into the Android side; the drift and dead-zone tools work on the wheel’s axes too.

04Does the test change anything on the pad?

No. It only reads what the pad sends. Calibration, where the manufacturer offers it, stays in the manufacturer’s own configurator, which works on the PC because ChimpDeck forwards the real device.
